A masterplan for the redevelopment of the land surrounding the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry has gone in front of the Design Commission to receive Design Advice. Up to two million square feet of development could be accommodated on the site, with a mix of uses that are complementary to OMSI’s operations, including residential and commercial uses. The masterplan is being designed by ZGF Architects, building on earlier work by Snøhetta. Gerding Edlen is acting as development advisor.

The Daily Journal of Commerce looked at how construction crews are navigating challenges* in building the Central Eastside’s District Office.
Renovation work is starting at the J.K. Gill Building at 408 SW 5th Ave, reports the Portland Business Journal. The 1923 building was formerly home to the Multnomah County Health Department, who are now located at the Gladys McCoy Building.
The Design Commission believes that the proposed Live Nation at Zidell Yards has room for improvement, writes the Portland Business Journal.

Pepsi Blocks Phase 1A Approved by Design Commission (images)
The Design Commission has approved the first phase of the Pepsi Blocks, part of a nearly five acre masterplan which was approved in 2018. Phase 1A will include an eight-story, 85’ tall building with 219 residential units (including 80 bedrooms of affordable housing); nearly 13,000 sq ft of retail space; the restoration of the existing mid-century bow truss Pepsi pavilion building; a publicly accessible plaza; and portions of a woonerf along NE Pacific St. The project is being designed by Mithun for Security Properties. 164 vehicular parking spaces and will be provided in two levels of below grade parking. 247 long term bicycle parking spaces will be provided in a secure bike room, including 17 spaces for recumbent or cargo bikes.

Division 28 Homes Receive Design Advice (images)
Design Advice has been offered to Hacker architects for the Division 28 Homes, a 10-unit co-housing development proposed in the Richmond neighborhood. Urban Development Partners is acting as the owner’s representative. The project is being developed for one extended family, with members of varying ages, with the intention that family members are able to age in place. At the ground level the building would also include retail space and a restaurant with outdoor seating. 16 vehicular parking spaces are proposed in a below-grade garage.

Plans for the 10,000 seat Live Nation at Zidell Yards music venue are moving forward, according to the Oregonian.
Work to convert the former Vivian Apartments into the KEX Portland Hostel nearing completion*, writes the Daily Journal of Commerce.
The Oregonian wrote about developer C.E. John’s plans to construct a five story apartment building at 1137 NW 23rd Ave—a change in plans from an earlier proposal to renovate and expand the existing buildings on the site.
The Business Tribune wrote about how Glass Lab is offering a hip hub for start-ups. The building is named for the glass foundry formerly located into the recently renovated structure.
The Portland Business Journal wrote about the winners of this year’s DeMuro Awards, given by Restore Oregon for excellence in preservation, reuse, and community revitalization.
