PSU School of Business Administration expansion approved by Design Commission (images)
The Design Commission has approved a major renovation and expansion of the PSU School of Business Administration. The project design is by the Boston office of German firm Behnisch Architekten, with local architects SRG Partnership and landscape architects Mayer Reed. The project will involve the modernization and upgrade of the existing building on the south half of the block, and the addition of a new 36,000 sq ft structure on the north half of the block. Between the two will be a new glass atrium, with entrances from plazas on SW 6th Ave and SW Broadway.
Focus: Projects by Neighborhood
There are 95 neighborhoods recognized by Portland’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement, and Next Portland has now written posts about projects happening in 29 of them. In some of these neighborhoods we’ve written 20 or more posts; in almost half of them we’ve only written about one project. To a certain extent this reflects where development is happening: there are a number of cranes up in the Pearl for construction of high rises, while other neighborhoods don’t have a single pin on our map. It is also however a reflection of the fact that in the Central City Design Review is required for all projects; in other neighborhoods such as Northwest or Boise developers can choose between Design Review or the prescriptive Community Design Standards; while in other neighborhoods such as Richmond or Sunnyside projects never go through Design Review. As such there are sometimes no published images of large new buildings, even once they are under construction.
Over the past month we’ve added categories to all of our in depth posts. To see which neighborhoods we’ve written about the most, read on.

The proposed building will include 425 rental units, with a mix of studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments. According to the developer the intent is that the project will “have wide appeal including recent graduates and young professionals, families [and] empty-nesters.” Plans show a 30,000 sq ft grocery store at the ground level, along with a 5,000 sq ft ‘fast casual’ restaurant. The building will include 158 below grade car parking spaces, accessed from SW Harrison. 66 spaces will be reserved for the use of shoppers at the grocery store, with the remaining 92 spaces dedicated to residents of the building. The design architects for the building are Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture of Chicago, with Portland based Myhre Group Architects acting as consulting architects.
